If you don't need to be clobbered by dramatic plants (and I do sometimes) consider this one from Tibet: a pretty, delicate shrub with a flush of small lilac-pink flowers that have a delectable fragrance, blooming in April and sporadically thereafter. Almost translucent red-orange fruits follow on this deciduous shrub. Since the flowers bloom on second-year growth it can be difficult to prune. I would resist and accept its twiggy, arching, and sometimes tangled growth in favor of the flowers. Place it in a naturalistic garden so that it feels like it belongs and you'll be delighted with it. Or go in the opposite direction and try it as a bonsai.
