An evergreen perennial to 1' tall and twice as wide, Agapanthus orientalis 'Variegata' has narrow strappy leaves with a soft green mid-rib and cream to soft yellow margins. The also soft, pale blue trumpeted umbels bloom summer to fall on 2' stalks. Subtle variations in soft color make this one quite elegant and not for the person who needs to be hit over the head with a blast of color. But, my goodness it is lovely in winter, too, when the others have turned to mush. Mulch for lower temperatures. Seaside or inland, clay or loam, Agapanthus is not difficult as long as its soil is fertile and it gets plenty of water.
