In May and June, this terrestrial orchid's sumptuous and saturated red-violet spikes develop on thick, sturdy stems. Few flowers are this breathtaking! Upward-pointing, lance-shaped leaves clasp stems below to give it a lush look. Knotty, finger-like roots gave rise to its name — daktylos = finger and rhiza = root. It's about 24" tall, vigorous and clumping, and can tolerate drier soils in more shade, or sun with sufficient water.
