Huge, palmate leaves, emerging brilliant red before turning green, have red, somewhat spiny veins, and are held horizontally on dark red stems up to 6 feet long. Spring and fall flowers are long, russet plumes that can also reach up to 6 feet. Well-draining, rich soil is the ticket. Protect them from frost by cutting old leaves and mounding them over the crowns. Gunnera killipiana comes to us from Central America, principally Guatemala.
