Glossy, narrow, dark green leaves are the backdrop for first, unusually articulated geometric buds in May, and then 6-inch clusters of white, geometric flower cups with a maroon band inside each one. (Each floret is a pentagonal cup making a starburst effect.) This is a compact, dwarf cultivar of an eastern North American native. Kalmias were named by Linnaeus for Pehr Kalm (1715–1779, a pupil of his from Finland sent from Sweden in 1748 to survey the natural resources of N. America. 2–3' T & W; deadhead for floriferous results the following year.
