3-6' tall stems with tiers of whorled leaves culminate in turk's cap golden-yellow flowers with maroon blotches margined in red (ocellatum = "like a little eye"). June bloom. Native to California, it's a dryland bulb wanting to be completely dry from July to November if possible, accommodating rainwater if it has very good drainage. Full sun is its preference but it will put up with a little light shade.
