Very rare and exotic! coming from Poor Knight's Islands near New Zealand, so-named by Captain Cook in 1760. These islands have been separated from the mainland for millions of years and have, as a result, entirely unique flora. This is one!
For us, the combination of leaf and flower is very unlikely: blade leaves like an Iris or Phormium, and horizontal, bright watermelon-red flowers with upstanding filaments — the most exotic "toothbrush" to be found anywhere. Blooms come on in spring and can be between 7 and 15" long! It needs fast-draining soil and regular light waterings. 3' T x 5' W clump.
Minimum temperature: 35° F
