Elegant deciduous shrub with a twiggy, upright growth habit. 'Very Red' blooms with medium red blooms in late spring.  This cultivar is new to us. It was reputed to have flowers similar to the ever-popular 'Miyama-beni' BUT the bloom color has been disappointing, so we'll discontinue this selection. Fall leaf color varies in shades of red, yellow, and purple.  The species is native to the open woodlands of Japan, where it thrives in moist, organic-rich soil with an acidic PH; making it an excellent companion plant for many Rhododendron species. Best situated with morning sun and afternoon shade.  Blooms on previous year's growth—prune immediately after flowering.

3-4 ft W x 6 ft T  (May eventually mature to 15 ft with no pruning)
