The striking contrast of ebony-black culms and fine, bright green leaves is impossible to resist. Visitors to the garden nearly always admire, exclaim, and covet! Expect the culms to become black in 1 – 3 years, but new ones will always be green, creating a beautiful mix of various blacks and various greens, more visible if you snap off the lower leafy branches once a year to expose the culms — a bit intensive but terribly worth it. Reaching up to 45 feet high under very desirable conditions, it will usually top out at 15-25 feet in Western Oregon with a culm diameter of about 2", sometimes greater as I've seen in one grove in Monmouth, Oregon. A running bamboo, give it space or curb with bamboo barrier, a trench, or plant it on a mound.
