An introduction from the mid 1800's first described as ''Towering shafts of foliage,'' this sugar maple has an upright columnar form with several leaders reaching skyward especially as it matures. The height is approximately 4 times the width of the tree and major and minor branches are vertical. Acer saccharum 'Monumentale' tends to have a strong central leader in contrast to the multiple leaders of 'Newton Sentry' that start branching out about 6 feet from the ground. Great fall color in oranges and golds because, after all, it is a sugar maple.
