A rare Pacific Coast jewel.  Both portions of its name pay homage to the underside of its striking, lanceolate, evergreen leaves: Chrysolepis meaning golden scales, and chrysophylla meaning golden leaves. This Beech family member can become either a tree or a shrub depending on growth conditions.  Drier, sunnier, higher-elevation locations typically yield a shrub form. Given proper moisture and sun exposure it will slowly mature into a beautiful conical shape of about 20 feet tall in 30 years.

It is monoecious with white male flowers borne in the leaf axils, and a cluster of female flowers beneath them. A spiny bur contains one to three nuts. Dark green, leathery evergreen leaves with striking powdery-golden undersides are a joy to discover and share with others. This sweet native asks for patience to get established and grow but is very rewarding.
