Early to late spring, 2-inch pendent racemes of fragrant lemon-yellow blooms with red-violet anthers dangle elegantly and profusely on this large deciduous shrub. They bloom on zig-zagging branches before the peach new leaves emerge, covering the shrub like a spring rain. Toothed leaves are wide and soft, with a deeply impressed geometry of veins similar to that of a witch hazel to whom it is related. Overall, the impression it makes is soft, light, and billowy. Our hummingbirds enjoy this native shrub from China and Japan even though it developed where hummingbirds don't reside. Apparently, they are a new world bird.

Unlike C. paucifloras, once well-established C. spicata species & cultivars can tolerate some periods of drought.

Mature size: 4–6 ft T x 6–10 ft W

Minimum temperature: -20° F
