Found mostly in the Himalayas but also as far east as Vietnam, this H. aspera is one of the largest of the Hydrangeas reaching up to 18 feet in its native range, here, more like 10 x 10 feet. Leaves are heart-shaped, soft with fine hairs, and the September lace-cap flowers can reach up to an astounding 12 inches across — dusky medium to dark purple-blue fertile flowers in the center and a lacy edge of pale lavender-blue flowers on the periphery. It does like early sun from the east or light shade, and protection from wind. Keep it moist, particularly if it receives quite a lot of sun. Bees and butterflies will be interested.
