Spreading by rhizomes, this aquatic perennial prefers the shallow water of bogs or marshes or the margins of a pond. Large, elliptic, waxy blue-green leaves surround many upward-curving white spadices tipped in tiny yellow flowers April to June. These are both curious and showy, like so many flaming candles. The Syrian river Orontes is the reputed origin of the genus name but the plant is native to the eastern U. S. from Massachusetts to the Gulf of Mexico. 1'–2' T x 2–2.5' W
