Regal, slightly burnt orange-red 3-inch bells cluster atop dark, 3-4 foot stems. One of the most impressive hardy bulbs a gardener can be pleased to grow and deer resistant. Large, exotic flowers bloom in Oregon's early spring only because it is native to the higher elevation meadows of the Himalayas: Afganistan, Pakistan, Kashmir, and Northern India. Really, it doesn't care about national boundaries. A meadow-full is a sight to behold! Actual size bas-relief carvings in marble of this Fritillaria adorn walls in the Taj Mahal! If that weren't enough, Thomas Jefferson purchased the Crown Imperial from a Philadelphia nurseryman and grew it at Monticello. (Fritillarias deter moles, not that you needed another reason to grow them.)
