Wicked, wide, and hooked thorns are so scary that they're beautiful. White fragrant flowers bloom in early summer and trifoliate green leaves turn various oranges in fall. Naked, its thorny green form is visually exciting and sculptural. Usually fruits by its 12th year or luckily before. The somewhat smaller than golf ball sized yellow-orange fruits taste a little bitter, and somewhere between a lemon and a grapefruit. Europeans have used it dried or candied, the American colonists used it for its pectin, and in China, from whence it hails, it has been used medicinally for at least a few thousand years.
