A rounded, deciduous large shrub or small tree to 15' tall, this gratifying western native becomes covered with a profusion of flowers in spring. A soft, rose-purple haze enlivens the landscape February to April. Very heat-, drought-, and clay-tolerant, it's not for the coast; it needs distinct seasons to flower. Flowers, emerging before the leaves, and young pods are purportedly edible. Rounded heart-shaped leaves turn from a light green in spring, to medium green in summer, to a rich red in autumn. Butterflies will alight!
