Native to Southern Oregon, California, and Mexico. While a young plant, the glossy evergreen leaves are serrated and shaped like holly, granting some fantastic deer defense. The mature leaves are smooth and oblong with fuzzy golden undersides. Grows well in full sun to part shade. In the mountains, it can be shrubby and low-growing. An established plant will not only survive some summer drought but will keep looking beautiful.
