'Betberg' is a cultivar that first appeared in cultivation, after being given to plantswoman Beth Chatto by Isbert Preussler, who collected it from the Black Forest in Germany. The selection was named after a small nearby village. Stems and leaves emerge a dramatic purple-bronze, then gradually mature to green. Clusters of creamy-white, green-tipped flowers hang in spring from leaf axils followed by purple (toxic) berries. Appreciates moist woodland soil.
