An evergreen, shrubby ground cover with bright to dark green shiny round leaves. White, urn-shaped flower clusters in spring and summer followed by blue-black fruit which (we're told) can make a nice jam if you're so inclined. Or the birds will thank you for providing them a food source. The glossy, thick leaves and fuzzy stems are popular in flower arrangments.
Salal can be thicket-forming in amenable conditions--the stems will recline and root as the plant spreads, therefore, give it lots of room or plan ways to keep it in check. This easy-care, stalwart, Pacific NW native should not be overlooked for shady or part-shady areas of your garden. It can also thrive in full sun if given summer water.
Mature size: variable in height from 1 foot to 5 feet or more in cool, coastal conditions.
