Elegant deciduous shrub with a twiggy upright growth habit. 'Very Red' blooms with masses of deep red blooms in late spring. This cultivar is new to us and seems to have flowers similar to the ever popular 'Miyama-beni'. Fall leaf color varies in shades of red, yellow and purple. The species is native to the open woodlands of Japan where it thrives in moist organic-rich soil with an acidic pH; making it an excellent companion plant for many Rhododendron species. Best situated with morning sun and afternoon shade. Blooms on previous year's growth—prune immediately after flowering.
