A broadleaf evergreen tree, Meli has peeling, gray-brown bark, and handsome, glossy leaves. Black-purple fruit follows clusters of cream-colored, round-petaled flowers with pretty, protruding stamens. Moist shade is preferred. Endemic to Chile.
