20–40' tall and wide, the Dove Tree blooms from April to May with a breathtaking inflorescence composed of a small reddish button, the flower, and long pure white bracts. Among its other appellations are Laundry Tree, Ghost Tree, Handkerchief Tree, depending upon the person or the locale. Its namesake is Abbe Armand David, a Frenchman in southwestern China in the last part of the 19th c., who first collected this spectacular tree. The fall color can be variable from colorful oranges and reds to softer pastels. Moist, rich soil will remind it of home.
