From the Andes to Patagonia, D. spinosa is a slowly growing, upright evergreen shrub. Very dark green glossy and spiny leaves are reminiscent of Holly but the flower is an unlikely but enticing waxy, tubular, bright orange pendent bloom seemingly dipped in yellow—a much better take on the candy corn effect. Bloom time is summer and autumn.
