Native to eastern and central North America, Dodecatheon meadia is a relatively easy plant to grow since it is tolerant of clay as well as woodland soil. Always anxious to please, it will also bloom white, pink, or purple, one-inch flowers on multiple 1.5' reddish scapes rise from a basal cluster of lance-shaped leaves. The nodding flowers have reflexed or swept up petals and a dark "beak" pointing earthward. Winter moist, summer dry.
