In early to mid-summer, flowers appear with narrow, drooping, pink-purple petals surrounding a brown cone with yellow pollen; blooms are held on tall, upright, hairy brown-green stems. Smooth, narrow, dark green leaves form a rosette at the base of the plant.
Native to the East-central United States; in small areas of glades, open woodlands, and prairies.
