These twining, herbaceous vines have brilliant, buoyant, glowing golden leaves. They don't seem to burn even in full sun, so string them up wherever you might need some quick shade and they will do the trick all summer — and in good humor! Clusters of green-yellow flowers bloom from summer to early fall, then mature into papery, pine-cone-shaped, fragrant fruits that remain on the vines. Hops are a host plant for butterfly larva, so if you will tolerate a little chewing around the edges you're likely to have more butterflies in your garden.
