Vibrant, tubular pink flowers bloom in summer amid ever-gray-green leaves that are small, rounded, and leathery. This subshrub is found among higher elevation rocky outcroppings and prefers excellent drainage in full sun, and preferably the company of rocks or gravel to approximate conditions back home. PNW native.
Alpine penstemons grow best if planted in fall or early spring in sites with excellent drainage and either full sun or at least part sun. They grow poorly and are short-lived if given overly amended, nitrogen-rich soils. If planted directly in the ground, they require very little water once established; the first year, they would appreciate at least a weekly drink once high summer hits.
