This shrub-like perennial has branched, arching, thin red stems covered with trifoliate leaves made of long, olive-green leaflets. In early summer, light and airy masses of white blooms with showy red calyces effervesce. Autumn finds it ablaze in oranges and yellows. A North American native, best with summer water and bright shade, it will attract butterflies but usually not deer.
