A bi-generic cross between Franklinia alatamaha and Gordonia lasianthos, this small tree shares the very similar semi-cupped and slightly fringed large white flowers of both. July–September, it blooms prolifically and indomitably, attracting bees non-stop. With a light fragrance, careful where you sniff. Unlike Franklinia, its leaves are semi-evergreen, bright, polished, and in exciting contrast to the occasional brilliant red or orange leaf regardless of the season! The flowers are a little larger and more open and outward-facing than those of F. alatamaha, and the leaves more horizontal. It's an uncommon tree appreciated by collectors, but is really anyone's tree, since it is so attractive and useful, and should be used much more! It prefers rich soil, needs regular water to look its best, but is undaunted by heat. 20–30' tall, 10–15' wide.
