ManzanitasIn 2023, we planted over a hundred new manzanitas in the Manzanita Expansion Project which increased our dry garden by 50%. ShrubsShrubs provide winter bones, spring, summer, or fall flowers or berries, vertical interest, or cover the territory. They can provide essential wildlife cover and can mitigate erosion or suppress weeds. We often saddle sturdy shrubs with the pleasant duty of supporting compatible vines. Evergreen or deciduous, shrubs are an essential layer in our garden.
EvergreenCreate a balance in your garden of evergreen and deciduous plants. Evergreens, whether they are broadleaf evergreens or conifers, make the indispensable structure for the garden year round. And for those who desire it, evergreens are the quintessential low-maintenance plant. The range of evergreen leaves, forms, and textures is almost limitless, with many also providing flower, scent, and berry.
Drought-TolerantThese plants will thrive in dry conditions, making a special kind of landscape of interesting, often geometric patterns, textures, and forms. The color palette of the dry garden is unique, with a bit more silver and gray-green, bright yellows, reds, and oranges. Look for plants for dry shade, too! Garden without expensive irrigation infrastructure, reduce your water use as well as your workload.
Deer-ResistantWhile there are no guarantees in this category, deer are LESS likely to nibble on these garden gems. The more deer-resistant plants in the garden, the greater the deterrent, perhaps allowing you to tuck in some not-so-resistant plants.
FragrantThese plants will please your nose! Plant them where your nose goes — near an entrance, along a walkway, next to a patio, or underneath a bedroom window, porch, or balcony!
