This upright grass sends up new foliage that is dark green, then as the weather cools in fall it starts to turn purple then ultimately black.

In late summer, flowering stems rise above the leaves and send out 3-fingered flower clusters that are said to look like turkey feet. But, you know, attractive turkey feet.

Happiest in moist, rich soils, but once well-established it can tolerate some drought. Cut stems to the ground in late winter before new growth emerges. Can self-sow.

Mature size: 4-5 feet tall x 1-2 ft W, flowering stems can reach 8 ft tall.

Minimum temperature: -30° F
