Lace-cap flowers with pink to blue-purple center clusters and lavender-white sterile flowers on the periphery bloom in late summer against this, first-ever, purple-leaved Hydrangea. The leaves, velvety to rough and a little leathery, grow evermore dark purple with rose undersides. Depending upon its location, this large shrub can become any number of wonderfully moody, dusky purples. It even exhibits good fall color before dropping its leaves. We are indebted to Dan Hinkley for the introduction of this Chinese Hydrangea. (I just saw it in our garden nearly covered with honey bees and other small pollinators.)
