Southwestern Oregon Lewisia blooms spring to fall in an array of all the colors of the sunset. 1-inch white-edged flowers with waxy-looking petals cluster above succulent, dark evergreen, ground-hugging rosettes. Tap-rooted to find its way between rock crevices, it will thrive in rocks or gravel, doing well also in sharply-draining soil in a well-draining pot. Make a mounded gravelly bed of summer-long color, or plant in a crevice of a dry-stacked stone wall, make a crevice garden, or make a long-lasting, easy care gift in a tufa container. Winner of a Royal Horticultural Society Award of Garden Merit. (Cliff Maids — could be a name for a women's rock-climbing club with Lewisia for a logo.) In the not-too-far-distant future, you'll have one-foot wide mounds with a looong-blooming, irrepressible floral display on six-inch stalks.
