Mountain pride is a handsome alpine penstemon from the mountains of the Sierra Nevada in Eastern California into Nevada. It is a low evergreen, almost mat-forming plant with bright magenta tubular flowers in mid-summer. The color will be more muted if in less alpine-like conditions.
Alpine penstemons grow best if planted in fall or early spring in sites with excellent drainage and either full sun or at least part sun. They grow oddly if given overly amended, nitrogen-rich soils. If planted directly in the ground, they require very little water once established; the first year, they would appreciate at least a weekly drink once high summer hits. In container, they require more regular water, but it's best given in the early morning or evening as they dislike sudden temperature change.
Keep in mind, these plants are most commonly killed with overwatering and poor drainage. This particular species is even less water-tolerant than other West Coast alpine penstemons.
