Upright and deciduous, Chaparral Currant loves the sun if planted near the coast, or part shade if planted inland.  In either case, provide well-draining soil. The foliage is pungently fragrant, and when it has fallen, the peeling bark is attractive. Pretty pink dangling flower clusters appear in very early spring. Its blue-black berries are a bird's late-season snack. During times of summer drought stress, R. malvaceum can drop its leaves—don't worry, this is a normal survival technique. To lessen this effect, mulch the soil well and make sure it gets deep watering in the spring.
