Purple-black flower buds open in mid-spring to offer fragrant and violet-tinged white flowers. Their fragrance has none of the sweet lemon-vanilla scents of Daphne odora but is somewhat like a soft Indian incense—very alluring. Also unlike the D. odora, the D. tanguticas can tolerate some drought (once established). Slow-growing and so worth it, forms a regular mound of small, thick, forest-green, evergreen leaves. A choice species.
