Pink buds open to deliciously fragrant white flowers in late spring—masquerading as a Daphne in terms of scent (truly a rival), it is, though, less finicky in the garden. Unlike Daphne, it's deciduous, so you get rich, red-orange-purple leaves in fall before they disappear. And the flower sepals, blushed pink, have ornamental value, too, on this underused shrub. Let it assume its natural, open habit or prune it regularly. Frankly, it can look rather awkward if pruned only on occasion.
