To easily complete your scheme of having something in bloom every month of the year: This low and dense (8" tall), mounding evergreen has bright purple and yellow pea blossoms November to March, and periodically throughout the summer! Always a good-looker and excellent for weed suppression! And a nice wax candle or apricot scent to boot! They tolerate a wide range of circumstances but would like more water if in more sun.
Polygalas are native to west-central Europe and Italy. They grow happily at the woodland edge, scrambling among rocks as observed in Slovenia by our intrepid nurseryman, Leonard Foltz.
Excerpt from our March newsletter 2025:
"Some plants have remained on our favorite list from the very beginning of the nursery in 1997. One of those is the low evergreen shrub, Polygala chamaebuxus ‘Kaminski’. We got our first starts as small plants from Siskiyou Rare Plant Nursery and those original plants are still growing today and some with very little care. This sweet little plant can begin blooming in December and carry on to March. I was delighted to see relatives of this shrub growing in the foothills of the Italian Alps. If the weather is warm the flowers can emit an lovely apricot fragrance."
