Arctostaphylos montana ssp. ravenii is one of our most treasured groundcover manzanitas. It was love at first sight when we saw it blooming at the Tilden Regional Parks Botanic Garden. Its round foliage is highlighted around the edge. The overall appearance is reminiscent of mollusc colonies in tide pools.

This subspecies was almost lost during a period of ramped-up development in the serpentines of San Francisco. All specimens today are from only one plant located in Presidio Park.

Although it's only ever been found growing on serpentine rocky soil, it's been thriving planted on a berm of our Willamette Valley clay.
