A springtime bloomer, 'Winterglut' (pronounced "vintergloot" in German meaning winter glow) has saturated magenta blooms on 16-inch, fleshy red stalks. When not dazzling you with its color, the leaves contribute a lushness to the garden, large at 10" long and 8" wide, glossy, and burnished red in winter—a winter glow! The namesake of the genus, Bergenia, is in tribute to German physician and botanist Karl August von Bergen (1704-1759), a key to its pronunciation with a hard "g" to answer your burning question. 1.5' T & W, slowly increasing.
