In spring, the tree is covered in profuse red to light-pink bracts. The spring foliage also has a pink blush. Summer foliage has a light yellow-green variegation around a deeper green center. More drought-tolerant and disease-resistant than the straight species.
Grows best in well-drained acidic soils in part sun with regular summer water. Benefits from 2-4 inches of mulch to retain moisture. Variegation is stronger with heat and light and develops through the season. The second photo of the full tree was taken in early September.
Note on growing in full sun: Our mature tree, planted in full sun, is quite drought-tolerant, and its variegation looks far less sunburnt than most of our other variegated trees; however, in our new summers, when rain is scarce, a young tree will struggle till established with crisped up edges from August till the fall.
