A bold native from SW Oregon and NW California for wet to moist soils. The rounded leaves with lobed edges range from 10 to 20 inches and upward-cupping to catch a pretty pool of rainwater. Each leaf is supported by its own thick maroon stem rising from significant rhizomes. Large, ornamental pink and white umbels bloom in mid-spring, and leaves blush beautifully in late summer. In fall through early winter, the leaves take on a captivating glow reminiscent of smoldering embers before going dormant. Blackish edges highlight the vibrant red and orange hues of autumn foliage, creating a striking and enchanting display. Do keep it moist in summer — it can be grown in full sun with sufficient water. Native to Oregon and California and deer-resistant.

We have two main groups of Darmera peltata in the garden here. One in full sun directly on the edge of our main water feature, and the other in full shade and about 6 ft away from another water feature. In full sun, the foliage is held tightly and upright. The largest leaves are about 12-18 inches in diameter, but many more are between 8-10 inches. In full shade, the plant is a little "looser"; you can see the stems holding up the significantly larger round leaves. In full shade, the largest leaves can easily get to 24 inches in diameter, with the majority closer to 12-18 in as the average.
