Native to China and Japan, this sub-shrub resembles a small Hydrangea serrata with very loose, open flower clusters at branch ends. The individual white blooms are open, almost flat, bowls, some of which on each plant are sterile and some complete. The complete blooms have fluffy, yellow centers. The long, dark green leaves are lance-shaped and turn golden in fall. 'Kaeda' has larger blooms and large leaves than the species. A striking, unusual specimen.
