Narrow ribbons of rich red, the more brilliant in the setting sun, mingle with greens after they first emerge entirely blue-green. Into summer its red blades deepen to burgundy topped with atmospheric panicles of purple. The species is a North American native with a broad range. A vital larval host for PNW native butterflies, such as Skippers, and offers crucial nesting cover and seeds for native birds.
