If you're looking for an elegant dose of tropical-ness to inject into your garden, then consider this beauty. Large, green leaves (up to 6 inches long) that have a fuzzy coating and silver undersides that will remain evergreen if provided protection from freezes. In summer or fall, depending on the local temperatures, flower spikes up to 15 inches long burst forth with copious purple-blue blooms, each about 1.5 inches across.

If you live in an area with cold winters, then consider planting this in a large pot that you can move indoors when temperatures dip towards & below 30° F.

Compared to Tibouchina urvilleana, T. heteromalla has bigger leaves and smaller flowers, though the flower spikes of T. heteromalla are much longer with more blooms per spike. The purple blooms on T. urvilleana lean toward fuchsia, whereas the blooms on T. heteromalla lean blue.

Mature size: 4-10 ft T x 4-8 ft W
