Low mounding manzanita with broad, fuzzy, bright lime green leaves that are remarkably clear of winter spotting for such a hairy manzanita. From fall until its bloom time in late winter, it's adorned with large, bright red inflorescence. A. confertiflora is endemic to Santa Rosa Island of the Channel Islands off the coast of California, where it grows straight out of the sandstone outcroppings. We were worried about planting in just mounded soil, given its sharply drained native habitat, but our two trial plants have been thriving.

For those East Coast gardeners who are looking to push the envelope, this might be one to try, as its island dwelling may have made it more adaptable to your humidity. If you do attempt, please, please, please, tell us how it goes.

Mature size: 1-2 ft T x 6 ft+ W

Minimum temperature: 10º F

*The minimum temperature is usually listed as 15°F, but our baby plant did not skip a beat at extended cold down to 13°F in the 2024 winter.

Not recommended for hot and humid climates.
