Introduced by Santa Barbara Botanic Garden this fast-growing Manzanita has distinctive glossy green leaves with large clusters of white blooms in winter. One of the few large Manzanitas that are candidates for a large planter with proper soil adjustments. This native endemic of the Channel Islands has been growing beautifully in the full sun of our mid-Willamette Valley garden here in Oregon.
Planted as a 3 qt in late fall 2023, winter pictures taken December 2024 after its first year. The test plants went through their first winter (2023-2024) unscathed, but they did have some decent frost damage in year two (2024-2025) when we had low temperatures of 13° F. They are recovering well as of May 2025, but we suggest more winter protection in areas with sustained temperatures colder than 15° F, either via location (more of a south-facing hill or near a structure) or by frost blankets.
