From each tuber, a single leaf of 7+ leaflets arises followed in spring by a flower stalk from near the leaf base. The pitcher-like spathe surrounding the spadix is purple with white stripes and berries ripen to a bright red, visible after the spathe falls away. Paradioecious, so may not produce female flowers every year. Poisonous to pets due to calcium-oxalate. Summer Dormant
