From below, large heart-shaped leaves come the largest blooms of the Asarum genus! This Chinese ginger species produces three-pointed blooms with deep purple speckles condensing down its dark throat, in the spring. Slowly forming stoloniferous clumps, this is a great, well-behaved evergreen groundcover for shady, well-drained areas.
(Note: this is not culinary ginger; it is called ginger for its scent when crushed.)
